The Broken Trail follows the journey of Prentice “Print” Ritter, an aging but honorable horse trader in the American West, who recruits his estranged nephew Tom Harte to help him deliver a large herd of horses from Oregon to Wyoming in the late 1800s. Print hopes the job will secure his future and give Tom an opportunity to build a more stable life. Although the two men barely know each other, they begin the trail with a sense of quiet respect, understanding that survival on the frontier requires trust and cooperation.

Their journey takes an unexpected turn when they stumble upon five young Chinese girls who have been sold into prostitution by a ruthless trafficker. Horrified by their treatment and refusing to abandon them, Print and Tom decide to rescue the girls, even though doing so puts their mission—and their lives—at risk. The girls, frightened and unable to communicate at first, slowly begin to trust the two men, finding safety for the first time in years. Print and Tom’s choice transforms their simple horse-drive into a dangerous and morally charged mission.

As the group travels across harsh landscapes, the threat of the traffickers and their hired guns continually looms. Tom becomes particularly protective of the girls, especially Nola, the eldest, whose strength and quiet resilience leave a deep impression on him. The film explores how compassion can arise even in the harshest environments, as the girls learn to ride, help with camp chores, and begin feeling a sense of belonging among their protectors.

Their path is further complicated by encounters with rustlers, harsh weather, and conflicts with local outlaws who view the girls as property rather than human beings.
